What is bone broth?

A warm cup of bone broth during winter seems like the perfect way to begin or even end the day (warm drinks for winter). It is a healthy drink that is made by boiling animal bones, bone marrow as well as connective tissues. Singh says you can go for anything from bison to chicken to turkey to pig to prepare bone broth.

Bone broth for healthy skin

Bone broth has many health benefits, and turns out, it is rich in collagen. It has been known to help with the repairing and healing of skin and tissues, shares the expert.

According to Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, collagen is the most abundant protein found in our body. It has fiber-like structure, which is used to make connective tissue. It is a major component of skin, bone, muscles, tendons as well as cartilage. It helps to make tissues so strong that they are able to withstand stretching. Our bodies gradually make less collagen as we grow older. Ultimately the skin’s elasticity gets affects and we also end up having wrinkles.

Having a cup of bone broth can do away with collagen issues to a great extent. But you might have to eat a collagen supplement to reduce wrinkles as well.

Bone broth recipe

Singh says to prepare bone broth, go for big bones of an animal who is grass-fed as they have the best nutrient profile.

• Take big bones from the butcher then clean and bleach them for 5-10 minutes, depending on the size of the bones.
• Rinse them to remove impurities.
• Roast them till they become golden brown.
• Add the bones to a vessel with water and boil it for around 10 hours. Boiling it will make sure that the nutrients are extracted from the bones.
• Cool it down or have it fresh with desired seasoning.

The expert says that you can use the broth as a base and make soups with added vegetables or base for a pasta.

This will help you to build immunity, help in digestion and support joint health as well. It is also good for your gut health which is responsible for nutrient absorption and health of the skin.
