It’s again the time of the year when we look back at the memories of the past year. Over the past few years, the fitness industry has changed the way people look at working out. From gyms shutting down to a massive influx of digital fitness, the way the world perceived fitness changed massively. However, the chaos paved the way for new fitness trends to emerge and reign supreme this year. If rumours are to be believed, some fitness trends of 2022 may continue in the New Year.

To put the rumours to rest, we asked some of the leading names in the fitness industry to share the fitness trends they think did well in 2022 and will continue in 2023.

Popular fitness trends of 2022

Here are the fitness trends that might continue in the New Year:

1. Mind-body exercise like Pilates will continue to be popular, says Namrata Purohit

Pilates and fitness expert Namrata Purohit shares, “Mind-body exercises will continue to rule through 2023, just as it did in 2022. According to a popular fitness report and study of 2022, Pilates was one of the most popular forms of exercise in 2022 and there was an increase of 38 per cent from 2021 to 2022. We expect there to be an even higher rise in the following year. People want to get the best results by training smart, living pain-free, and also feeling relaxed while at it. Pilates is an excellent form of exercise to achieve one’s goals and also work the mind and body connection.”

2. Mindfulness and meditation will be key to fitness, says yoga expert Shynee Narang

Certified yoga instructor Shynee Narang believes mindfulness and meditation will continue to rule 2023 as they did in 2022. She highlights that people are understanding the necessity of focusing on mental health by including mindfulness and meditation in their training and everyday routines.

“With decreasing attention spans, clutter, and fast-paced life, a stable mind would be the only key to physical, mental and social strength. That’s where yogic practices like Bharamri Pranayama, Ujjayi Pranayama (breathing exercises), Yoga Nidra, and meditation are becoming essential and popular among all age groups,” adds Narang.

2. Online training is a fitness trend that will continue to attract people, says Aminder Singh

The pandemic forced people to start working and working out at home. It has become a habit for many now. People started to feel better in their home gym setup as it saved time and gave them privacy. This also popularised the idea of online training. One-on-one personal training sessions are on the top mark and may remain so in the coming year, adds Aminder Singh who uses the power of digital media to promote fitness.

3. Health and fitness trackers will be used more than ever: Rehan Poncha

Olympian and Arjuna Awardee, fitness trainer Rehan Poncha shares, “Fitness apps and health and fitness trackers that you wear on your wrist, keep you accountable to yourself, remind you to get back and stay true to a schedule you set for yourself. These are the reasons why I feel they work great. The best part is that you can track how your body is feeling through training, and know when to push and when to rest it, among other great indicators like heart rate and blood oxygen monitors, sleep cycle monitoring, and calorie counters.”

As per the expert, personal health is a priority for more and more people today, and tech that supports our fitness goals is here to stay well into 2023 and beyond!

5. Free movement will be liberating, says Robin Behl

Fitness expert Robin Behl, one of the three forces behind The Tribe, says, “Free movement is picking up and will continue in 2023. In terms of people expressing movement mobility and not just traditional weight lifting and strength training, it gives them a lot more freedom. Free movement also works a lot on mind-body connection. Awareness about it is picking in India and the rest of the world.”
